What do I need to become a volunteer?

The main requirement is a commitment to helping our clients and a willingness to learn the best ways of doing that. We need a range of skills and types of help. Some volunteers can offer an amount of time each week on a regular basis, while others might assist us on a "once off" basis with a particular task or project.

 What do volunteers do?

There are currently three main areas in which the volunteers help CCA run better.

Volunteers at St Joe's

Many cook the evening meal and assist with the clearing up after supper.

Another volunteer assists with the clothing store.

The gardens are beautifully kept by yet another volunteer.

Volunteers at the Old Glassworks

Volunteers work along side the project staff, befriending clients and assisting them to obtain relevant advice and help.

Administrative Volunteers

A volunteer comes in once a week to assist the CCA staff with the membership, and general office duties.

Another stalwart assists with the editing and layout of our quarterly News-letter.

Training

We believe our clients deserve the best services and that our volunteers deserve the best support to enable them to contribute their help effectively, appropriately and safely.

Funding from the NLCB ensures that we have the ability to offer volunteers good quality general training, as well as looking at an individual volunteer's training needs.

So far this year, our staff and volunteers have attended the following training courses:

St. John's Ambulance First Aid course (Specifically designed for those dealing with homeless clients)

  • Mental Health issues
  • Basic Food Hygiene
  • Drug issues
  • Outreach work and best practice
