The sponsorship money raised on the day will give the Gardening Project a much-needed boost, allowing it to become more financially independent and to fulfil its potential. The vegetable patches at St. Joseph’s have been producing fresh potatoes, onions, cucumbers and all manner of other vegetables since they were first dug in spring 2009. When the crops are ready for harvest they are then distributed among the projects where our volunteers turn them into nutritious meals for Stonepillow clients.
But the “Grow-your-own Gardening Project is only just gaining momentum. The project’s founder Stephen Higham (a project worker at Stonepillow daycentres) and his team want to take full advantage of the gardening potential at St. Joe’s, and the funds raised from the sponsored swim will give those involved the opportunity to implement some of their creative ideas. Current plans in the pipeline are a new greenhouse and a small orchard of fruit trees, providing even more food and the opportunity for even more clients to get involved and “grow-their own!”
Sylvie Johnston, Director of Operational Services at Stonepillow gives her full support to the fundraising event:
“I have been very impressed with the dedication and motivation Stephen and his small team have demonstrated this last 6 months. Stonepillow is about enabling disadvantaged people and supporting enterprise in whatever shape it might develop.
So, what better way to be self sufficient than growing your own vegetables when you have to feed yourself on a very low income?
What better way but to share the fruits of your labour with others and feel that you have achieved something worthwhile today, despite the many barriers life throws at you?
This sponsored swim is an excellent way for Staff and Service Users to work together to achieve a common goal, so please give generously!”
If you want to support our staff and clients in this worthwhile cause, you can contact Stephen Higham on 07974 622393.
And to those taking part in the event, we wish you the very best of luck!
